Safety Day – June 27, 2018

9th Annual Kayak

Rescue & Safety Clinic

June 27, 2018 5:30-8:30PM

Your local Paddle Canada Instructors along with Comox Valley Kayaks are pleased to invite you to the 9th Annual Kayak Rescue & Safety Day at Goose Spit. What a great way to celebrate National Paddling Week (albeit a bit late), and practice your safety skills right at the beginning of paddling season!

About a dozen local Paddle Canada Instructors have signed up to volunteer at this event and we will be offering a number of brief clinics in various kayak rescue techniques. There will be something for everyone – whether you plan on getting wet (which we encourage!) or just come to watch from shore.

Here is a snapshot of the day:

  • Basic kayak rescue techniques; wet exit, assisted rescue, solo rescue and rafting up
  • More advanced rescues; scoop, hand of god, paddle float re-entry and roll and rolling tune-up for those who have a hit and miss (or splash/thrash) roll.  (For these more advanced sessions you will be asked to demonstrate your basic kayak rescue techniques first)
  • Basic towing; contact tows.
  • Dry land safety clinics on the use of Canadian Coast Guard required safety equipment, clothing choices for paddling, recognizing and treating early stages of hypothermia, safe roof rack transportation of your kayak (on request)

This is a registered Paddle Canada clinic and because we (the PC instructors) are donating our time and skills, Paddle Canada has waived any registration fees.

Boats & wetsuits provided upon request by Comox Valley Kayaks & Canoes.
