K’omoks Estuary – May 11, 2018

Time:  launch at 6:00pm

Meeting Place:  Courtenay Marina launch

Description:  Meet at the launch ramp at 5:45 for a pre-trip talk. This is a Project Watershed’s Guided Estuary Kayak Tour practice, which is also a Club Paddle. We will paddle up river to Simms Park to discuss the recently completed work there. Turn back downstream and stop in front of Locals to discuss the nasty steel wall and Kus-kus-sum. Then onto the Courtenay Airpark Lagoon to discuss the breech completed in 2015. From there we will paddle along the Hollyhock Marsh where our naturalist volunteer will point out plant and animal species specific to estuary, as well as what makes our estuary so special. Return to Marina.

Length of trip:  max. 2 hours

Rating: 1 (day paddle – easy)

Notes: This is the test-run of Project Watershed’s Guided Estuary Kayak Tours. There will be at least 4 stops where kayaks will raft together to facilitate commentary and Q&A. Your advice and feedback will be requested to streamline tours we will be doing with other groups through the summer, who may not be as experienced at paddling as Club members are.
