Comox Marina to Royston Wrecks — May 1st, 2019

*Social Gathering & Appy Party @ 1933 Taylor Ave, Comox*

Paddle Destination: Royston Wrecks (approximately 3 nautical miles round trip)

Date: Wednesday, May 1, 2019

Launch Time & Place: 5:30 pm from Comox Marina – please arrive early enough so we can all have our “paddles in the water” and launch by 5:30 pm!

Meeting Place: Comox Marina Parking Lot by the Boat Launch Ramp

Launching Notes: There is no charge for launching a kayak at the Comox Marina (if you carry it to the water). There is no fee for parking provided you park in the smaller-sized single vehicle spaces (do not park in the long spaces for vehicles with trailers). Please launch kayaks from the left side (facing the water) of the boat ramp.

Warning: Kayakers need to be aware of boats entering or leaving the marina. We must exit the marina quickly and in groups so as to NOT interfere with the marina traffic. Also, everyone must dress appropriately and be aware of the cold water temperature in the Bay.

Description: This paddle is from the Comox Marina boat launch to the Royston Wrecks and back via the west end of Goose Spit. Each crossing of the Comox Harbour/estuary should take between 30 and 45 minutes. We will spend time exploring the Wrecks and then paddle back via the beautiful white sandy beaches at the west end of Goose Spit. The plan is to return to the marina by about 7:30pm. The high tide (12.6 ft) occurs at 4:52pm and the low tide (8 ft) happens at 10:31pm. After everyone loads their boats we hope paddlers will regroup for a social and “appy” party at 1933 Taylor Avenue. Please bring what you want to drink and a small serving of food that is intended to be shared.

Paddling Time: 2 hours (approximately 3 nautical miles with some sightseeing)

Trip Rating2a Day Paddle – Intermediate

Paddlers need to feel comfortable paddling across the 1.5 nautical miles of the open water in the Comox Harbour to the Royston Wrecks (and back) – in some potential chop and wind (should it arise). NOTE: The paddle might go east from the marina to the inside of Goose Spit if windy conditions exist in the crossing to Royston.

Coordinator (name/email/phone):

Helen Koziol, hkoziol@shaw.ca, (250) 339-4636.

Max. People: no upper limit – will break into groups if necessary

Other Conditions:  Each person will need to carry adequate water given the weather and the duration of the paddle AND appropriate clothing must be worn (i.e. wetsuit or drysuit)
