Destination: Tree Island (Sandy Island) from Union Bay Boat Launch

Date: Wed, July 3rd, 2019

Launch Time: ***12 noon – launch time is at noon due to the tides

PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY and BE READY to launch your boat at noon!

(N.B. Baynes Sound crossing is approximately 2.5 nautical miles)

(remember to bring your CPC decal for free launching at UB)

Tides: This paddle has been timed to work with the tides. A very low tide of only 1.0 ft (0.3 m) occurs at 1 pm. When we launch, the tide will be ebbing and quite low (1.5 ft). We will enjoy slack tide at Tree Island then at around 2 pm we will start to paddle back. The tide will have just turned as we launch (1.9 ft). We should reach Union Bay at around 3 pm with a tide of about 4 ft.

Meeting Place: Union Bay Boat Launch

Description: Mid-day paddle from Union Bay boat launch to Tree Island and back. Each crossing of Baynes Sound (~2.5 nm) should take approximately 50 minutes.

We will paddle directly to Tree Island. This paddling trip will include spending about 1 hour exploring Tree Island at a very low tide. The beautiful white sandy beaches are incredible! You may want to go for a swim. Please bring food with you (and perhaps bring extra to share with the other paddlers). The tide will be too low to paddle around the island. The paddle back to Union Bay will start at around 2 pm. We will paddle south along the coast of Denman Island until we are almost across from Union Bay then paddle across. We expect to arrive back at around 3 pm. After loading our boats we may want to meet up again at Roy’s Town Pub in Royston to quench our thirsts (optional).

Paddling Time: Estimated at about 50 mins in each direction (2.5 nm).

Trip Rating: 2a (for more details go to comoxvalleypaddlers.ca/trip-ratings)

It is recommended that paddlers be trained for “wet exits” and “re-entering” your boat.

*Paddlers need to feel comfortable crossing Baynes Sound, especially if we encounter some chop and/or wind.

Notes: The island has an outhouse. No water is available. Each paddler needs to carry adequate water given the conditions and duration of the paddle. Bring sunscreen!
