Comox Paddler’s Club Trip Coordinator’s Description

Destination: Circumnavigate Tree Island.

Date: Wednesday, Sep 6, 2023.

Time: Launch boats at 3 PM from Union Bay Boat Launch.  Attendance of the Pre-Launch discussion is mandatory.

Parking:  Lots of free parking located near to the boat ramp.  Park on highway side and NOT in the longer spots intended for boat trailers.  Remember to place your CPC decal on your dash to launch for free.

Tides:

• 4.4 m High tide at 12:49 pm

• 3.6 m Low tide at 5:43 pm – Gently ebbing during our paddle.

Description: After launching from the UB boat ramp, we will paddle across Baynes Sound to Denman Island (~ 2 nm) then paddle northward along Denman’s shoreline passing Henry Bay to arrive at Tree Island (~ 4 nm total).

Paddlers not wanting to circumnavigate will go ashore at the beautiful white sandy beach and explore Tree Island on foot or possibly go swimming.

For those interested in completing a longer paddle, the tide is high enough to circumnavigate Tree Island and Seal Islets. This will add another ~3 nm. Those circumnavigating are expected to return to the beach on Tree Island 45 minutes later.  Everyone will launch from Tree Island again at roughly 5 pm and paddle as a group back to the launch site (~2.5 nm). Return estimated at 6 pm.

NOTE: Outhouses are available at the boat ramp and on Tree Island (best to bring TP).

Length of Trip:  Approximately 6 nm (return) if you don’t circumnavigate Tree Island.

Those wishing to circumnavigate should plan on the distance being about 9 nm or about 3 hrs.

Rating: Trip Rating is 2a – Intermediate Day Paddle

Coordinator: Wilf Craats & Helen Koziol – see membership list

Max. People: Everyone is welcome.  HOWEVER, we will be crossing Baynes Sound so paddlers must have a seaworthy kayak, spray skirt and all the required safety gear. All paddlers must have recently practised their self and assisted rescues. This paddle is weather and wind dependent so check our website, FB and e-mails for last minute updates.

CONSIDER: Regrouping at Roy’s Towne Pub afterwards!
