Comox Paddler’s Club Trip Coordinator’s Description

Destination: Union Bay area

Date: May 20, 2023

Time: 9 AM paddles in the water.

Meeting Place: Union Bay Boat Launch

Description: Group 1 (primary): Shoreline paddle.  The direction selected will depend on sea conditions and will be decided at the pre-launch meeting.

Group 2 (optional): Crossing to Denman Island only if there is interest, sufficient paddlers in each group (5+) and suitable sea conditions for the crossing.

Length of Trip (hours/days): 2 hrs for Group 1 and 4 hrs for Group 2.

Rating:  Trip Rating 2 – see link for requirements.

Coordinator: Bob A.

Max. People: no limit

Other Conditions: The Pre-launch meeting will finalize trip routing and participants.

Concept: I want paddlers of all capabilities to get out and enjoy this area.  Group 1 route (Easy rating) will paddle nearshore and into the wind for about one hour and then return to launch site.  If there is sufficient interest, then Group 2 (Intermediate rating) will be formed to paddle across Baynes Sound to Denman Island, have a snack and return to Union Bay.  This will be a situational decision based on sea conditions, group interest and capability.  The Baynes Sound crossing is 3 km in length with motor boat traffic present.  Tight group discipline will be required for the crossing.

Notes: Ebbing tide: 4.1 m high tide at 6:08 AM and 0.7 m low tide at 2:15 pm.

Baynes Sound has minimal protection from prevailing winds, so check weather forecast to ensure marine conditions are within your ability.  The trip is a GO unless Marine forecast has a warning in effect.
